The Incidence of Trigeminal Nerve Injuries during the daily practice of the Dentist and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is significantly high. The management of these injuries can be rather complex and it will require the treating professional to have microsurgical skills, extra academic study, clinical abilities and special understanding of best practices to achieve aceptable success rates.

Surgical and clinical management of trigeminal nerve lesions is still in its infancy and meanwhile there are many advancements in scientific research and technology that offer alternatives to improve post operative success, it is important for the contemporary clinician to be prepared to prevent, diagnose, improve microsurgical surgical skills and offer the best evidence based treatment plan for the patient that has suffered a injury.

Dr. Michael Miloro, DMD, MD, FACS

Professor and Department Head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, Chicago, IL, USA

Scholarly interests

Dr. Miloro has lectured nationally and internationally on many subjects, including orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial trauma, trigeminal nerve repair, TMJ surgery and total joint replacement, endoscopic-assisted maxillofacial surgery, and distraction osteogenesis of the maxillofacial skeleton. He has published extensively in the medical and dental literature, has written many textbook chapters, is a manuscript reviewer for several major journals, and serves as Section Editor of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and he is an editor of three major textbooks in the specialty, Peterson's Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Management of Complications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Trigeminal Nerve Injuries.
